News of the passing of metal music maestro Ronnie James Dio has left his rock star peers reeling. Megadeth’s drummer, Shawn Drover, shared his dismay, and some cherished memories, in a statement online:

“I am at an absolute loss right now upon hearing that Ronnie has passed away. I had the pleasure of touring both Canada and America in 2007 when Megadeth toured with Heaven & Hell (Black Sabbath in my eyes) and I swear to you he is one of the nicest human beings I have ever met, period. Many a night on that tour, Glen and myself would have amazing conversation’s with Ronnie about his career, etc. fully knowing he had probably told these stories 10,000 times to people and yet he answered every question I had with a big smile. I can recall so many times making eye contact with Glen (Drover - brother/former Megadeth/KING DIAMOND guitarist) sharing the exact same thought - ‘Dude, I can’t believe we are hanging with RONNIE JAMES DIO!!!!!’ If you are lucky enough in your lifetime to actually meet one of your idols (let alone tour with them) and they turn out to be even nicer than you could have envisioned, that is something you would truly treasure. Lucky for me, I will cherish those memories forever.”

Dio announced last summer that he was battling stomach cancer, and had undergone a serious treatment regimen the past several months. The news of his death on Sunday, May 16th was posted on Dio’s official website by his wife, Wendy.

The Slayer/Megadeth tour has been officially cancelled, as Slayer Frontman Tom Araya needs urgent back surgery.

The outing, which lasted through most Australia dates, will now be cancelled U.S., Canada and Europe.

Here is the band’s official announcement:

“Tom gave various medical treatments more than a fair shot,” said Slayer’s manager Rick Sales, “but they just haven’t handled the problem, so he’s biting the bullet and is scheduled for back surgery at the end of this month.”

This difficult decision made by the band’s bassist/vocalist Tom Araya means the cancellation of Slayer’s immediate tour plans that include the American and Canadian Carnage Tour dates that were set to kick off on January 18, as well as the band’s UK/European headline tour scheduled for March and April. Booking agents for both Slayer and Megadeth are already hard at work rescheduling the tour dates; tickets already purchased for these shows will be honored at the rescheduled dates.

The headbanging Araya, known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing, began experiencing back problems while on the band’s Australian/New Zealand/Japanese tour last October. In spite of his rapidly increasing pain and discomfort, he carried on with the tour, but immediately upon returning home saw an orthopedic specialist who diagnosed a Cervical Radiculopathy. The rocker initially did not want to take the major surgery route, so the specialist recommended a series of minimally-invasive procedures.

While those procedures have resulted in some improvement, Araya continues to deal with intermittent bouts of severe pain, numbness and muscle spasms. The surgical procedure that Araya will undergo, called an Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion, is a relatively routine practice and the recovery rate is excellent.

Sales added, “As unfortunate as this is for so many people - the Megadeth and Testament camps, the concerts’ promoters, and, of course, the fans - Tom’s health is the number one priority, and this has to happen.”
